History with Come Follow Me
History from the Hearth was developed in an attempt to simplify my family's schedule. After watching either my scripture study or history study being neglected at the expense of the other, I wondered if a coordinated approach would improve our study of both topics. For these first four years of Come Follow Me, I will be trying a coordinated schedule as an experiment. Others are invited to join me. By using anchor dates for key events in the Bible and Book of Mormon and connecting those dates to historical events and personalities around the world, we should be able to cover a wide range of topics each year.

The resource guides on this site are organized by general anchor dates. This is intended to be used as an index to help you identify stories that you may not have been aware of. What a blessing it is to have these resources available to us! I am so grateful to Dr. Glenn Kimber, Jenny Phillips, Marlene Peterson, and the staff at American Heritage as well as many others who have devoted so much time to help us discover the lessons and stories from history!❤️
For example
- During the Book of Mormon year, history can include ancient cultures including the Holy Land, Greece, China, the Renaissance, and discovery of America in preparation for the restoration of the gospel, and the establishment of the US Constitution, an inspired charter of freedom. We can also include a study of the native american cultures before Europeans came to settle the newly discovered lands of America.
- During the year for Doctrine and Covenants and Pearl of Great Price, history can include a study of the Creation, the Flood, ancient civilizations of Egypt and the Holy Land. American History study can include westward expansion after the Revolutionary War, the industrial revolution, and the American civil war.
- During the Old Testament year, history can include an in depth study of the Middle East, the Arab and Muslim cultures. Ancient civilizations of India, Greece, Persia, Rome, Egypt may be considered for deeper study. This could be a good time to examine different forms of government. Moses established one type of government for the children of Israel while other countries were ruled by a monarchy. American History during this year may include the events and personalities of the 20th century.
- During the New Testament year, the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire may be considered. In addition you may choose to study Persia, the home of the wise men. Families may consider the countries of eastern Asia this year. Families may consider an in depth study of the Middle Ages and what happened when the last of Jesus' apostles had been killed. How did the great apostasy impact hope and progress? It is also an opportune time to learn about the Byzantine and Ottoman empires or to look at the countries of Europe and how they developed.
